Artist Name: Jeff Wall October 27, 2007 – January 27, 2008 The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Jeff Wall is a Canadian photographer best known for his large-scale, color transparencies mounted in light boxes. Many of his images are staged and refer to the history of art and philosophical problems of representation. The photographs' compositions refer to historical artists like Velázquez, Hokusai, and Édouard Manet, or to writers such as Franz Kafka, Yukio Mishima, and Ralph Ellison. (Information from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Wall) I went to the Jeff Wall exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His images show the Conceptual Art, history, social interaction, and visual perception by using huge size and light boxes. His large-scale formats as well as his use of light boxes are very distinctive. As I viewed his work, I was amazed that his images are as high as the human body because he used the principles of design such as scale and proportion from his images. I was able to clearly see every detail of the images because his works are so large. The images show the relationship between the objects and the space within the frame more than I have seen in standard 8”X10” images. Also, his images referred to famous paintings. I observed his works for about 1 hour, and I think that he wants to make his works look like painting. For example, his picture of a woman is a remake of Manet’s Bar at the Folies-Bergeres picture. Next, Jeff Wall’s works also look like cinematography because he created his works by arranging many actors, and objects on location and then continued to shoot at scene. My favorite image is “A Sudden Gust of the Wind” based on a famous Hokusai print. This image amazed me because I wanted to know how Jeff Wall could capture a sense of frozen time while at the same faithfully recreating the composition of Hokusai. The many pieces of paper flying seem like the must challenging element to recreate. In my opinion, I think Jeff Wall’s works are cohesive because of the constant use of large size format and light boxes. Conceptually, this body of work holds together because of his reference to other visual arts – especially painting, and cinematography to create his concept. The formal elements of his images always show many planes, lines, color transparencies mounted in light boxes, and organic shapes. For example, “A Sudden Gust of the Wind” shows a very wide, open view, depth of field, and perspective. Although it is not apparent from this small picture of Jeff Wall’s work, the extremely large format lets the viewer “enter” the space of the image in an unusual way; it also for this same reason creates a feeling of refocusing. When I first saw this image, my eyes first noticed to the four people in the foreground. Then I looked at the mass of moving paper, which is at once in the foreground and the background. Also, Jeff Wall’s image shows three-dimensional space and the relationship of the plane and contains the illusion of deep space. I think Jeff Wall can capture the frozen time because “A Sudden Gust of the Wind” looks like such a spontaneous shot. I watched video about Jeff Wall in which he explained he had to shoot more than 100 shots to get this perfect image. In conclusion, Jeff Wall’s works are successful because he can build all of his images to hold together effectively. I love his ideas because he can create spontaneous, imaginative, and intentional shots all the same time.

Clarence H. White (1871-1925) Clarence Hudson White was a famous American photographer in this period (1871-1925), and he was also a famous teacher of photography. His photographic style focused on the art form, emotion, and pictorial portraits. Also, Clarence H. white’s photographs are all in black and white, and he was very experimental in the darkroom. All his images look gorgeous, and romanticized. His pictures reflect the value of the pictorials. He always used women and children as his favorite subject in his images. He created his images carefully because he took a long time to pose his models and frame the photographs. I also think Clarence H. White is very important to the history of photography because his works can directly express the sentimental feeling to the audience, and he also used soft focus technique to make the images like painting. Every image has its own story and feeling which the viewer can understand immediately. In addition, he is also the founder of the Clarence H. White School of Photography which many photographers graduated from. I choose him because he inspired me to think of imaginative pictures. I think his images have beautiful compositions and look like paintings. They have a very illustrative quality to me. Like him, I also love to use women and children as my models. My concept is to portray kids playing with the birds, and I focused on the emotion of the kids when they saw bird. So, I used the children in the public park around San Francisco to be my model, and while they are playing with the birds, I take a snap shot without notice from the kids. I think Clarence H. White also portrayed subjects with the daily life background doing everyday things, but he focused on the story in his images and nice composition. Unlike White, my shots are spontaneous because I tried to capture an idealized image that shows the essence of childhood. When I saw his “Ring Toss” image (he asked his models to post and act), I felt spontaneous and natural, and that is the feeling and look that I was going for in my shots. Thus, I used his technique to adjust my style. I snapped the children in candid shots, and I also carefully composed my images. Therefore, I used different technique from white, but I tried to keep to concept and feeling the same as White’s pictures which are timeless elegant pictorial images
These are my2 pics and 1 pics from Clarence H White. I choose Clarence's Ringtoss original photo that inspired me to portray kids playing with the birds ;D

I got FWD mail from my friend about Sang Satawat movie that was banned in Thailand. from ( http://www.petitiononline.com/nocut/petition.html) http://www.thaifilm.com/newsDetail.asp?id=246 English Version The film “Sang Satawat” (“Syndromes and a Century”), recently submitted to the Censorship Board, was not approved for release in Thailand unless cuts are made. The Board would permit the release on the condition that four cuts were excised. As a result, director Apichatpong Weerasethakul decided to cancel commercial release of the film in Thailand and stood firm that these cuts not be made. He has issued a statement: “I, a filmmaker, treat my works as my own sons or my daughters. When I conceived them, they have their own lives to live. I don't mind if people are fond of them, or despise them, as long as I created them with my best intentions and efforts. If these offspring of mine cannot live in their own country for whatever reasons, let them be free. Since there are other places that warmly welcome them as who they are, there is no reason to mutilate them from the fear of the system, or from greed. Otherwise there is no reason for one to continue making art.” Afterwards, the filmmaker’s representative contacted the Board and requested that the print of the film submitted for consideration be returned, including a letter confirming that the film would not be shown commercially and no appeal would be made. However, the Board refused to return the print, and insisted that they would do so only if these four cuts were removed by the Board itself.(see more details at http://a-century.exteen.com) Consequently, the detention of the print has sparked a widespread discussion especially on the Internet. A large number of resentful people, NGO workers and scholars have logged on to express their disagreement over the seemingly arbitrary censorship policies, which they regard as a form of oppression that the state employs to restrict the people’s freedom of expression. The Thai Censorship Board still operates on the basis of antiquated legislation dating from the Film Act of 1930, which was the time this country was still ruled by Absolute Monarchy. It eludes us all why Thai cinema has continued to be systematically straightjacketed even though there have been several attempts by the film community of the past 30 years to campaign for the complete overhaul of the aforementioned Film Act, whose essence functions against the spirit of genuine democracy in all manners. The shameful episode over “Syndromes and a Century”, a film that has brought much favorable critical attention to Thai cinema, is taking place in 2007 as the new constitution is being drafted by the National Legislative Assembly. This presents an opportunity to all of us, the local film community as well as film lovers from all over the world, to demand and reclaim our basic human rights to freely receive of informations and rights to express ourselves through cinema, which remains the only medium that’s still chained to the wicked pillar of undemocratic practice. We who sign our names here henceforth assert the ownership of our basic human rights and the dignity of human beings under a democratic society. We demand the National Legislative Assembly decree the movies a form of mass media, and that it be liberated from the shackles of state intervention and restriction, the same as other mass media such as radio, television and newspapers have long been set free. We’re petitioning not only for a just decision for “Syndromes and a Century”, but also for a long-needed modernization of Thai legislation concerning movie censorship. We demand that the authority revise the legislation to abandon the practice of cutting and banning films, and instead to implement a rating system of the kind used in free countries. This is the only way that Thai cinema and all cinema to be shown in Thailand can be freed from the shackles of outdated legal vandalism. One Chinese person walks into a bar in America late one night and he saw Steven Spielberg. As he was a great fan of his movies, he rushes over to him, and asks for his autograph. Instead, Spielberg gives him a slap and says "You Chinese people bombed our Pearl Harbor, get out of here." The astonished Chinese man replied "It was not the Chinese who bombed your Pearl Harbor, it was the Japanese". "Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, you're all the same," replied Spielberg. In return, the Chinese gives Spielberg a slap and says "You sank the Titanic, my forefathers were on that ship."
Shocked, Spielberg replies "It was the iceberg that sank the ship, not me."
The Chinese replies, "Iceberg, Spielberg, Carlsberg, you're all the same."
This particular joke won an award for the best joke in a competition in Britain. ..

The following pics are of the same place but taken under different seasons!!
Lessons on Life
There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.
The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in
summer, and the youngest son in the fall. When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.
The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said no it was covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.
The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.
He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up.
If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall.
Moral: Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don't judge life by one difficult season. Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time or later....
Thanks P'parn for sent e-mail to me.
Actually, I have another one picture the last season, but I can't upload pic so sorry.
